✖️ My Instagram & Twitter hack 🤳 Spotify is finally cracking video 🎞️ Radio no good for today's hits? 📻
Hi everyone,
🇦🇹 Just got back from a lovely team trip to Vienna with my IDAGIO colleagues. We had a wonderful time, with the highlight being a special tour through the Vienna State Opera, where we could even witness some of the rehearsals. I’ll write about it in more detail at a later time, but for now, check out my Instagram for some of the trip’s highlights.
🇫🇮 Just announced: I’m speaking at Slush Music!
👉 Based on last week’s post about what music startup founders often get wrong, I was asked for examples about products that get it right. Here’s my answer.
This week’s mailing: acquisitions, investments, the new iPhone, and a recipe from my digital hacks kitchen. 😎 Enjoy!
Love,
Bas

Streaming music
After two years, Spotify has struggled to break through with video
“In recent months, Spotify has focused on finding original content that can be tied to popular themed playlists such as RapCaviar and Rock This. Here, videos are interspersed in the news feed alongside music, which Spotify has told content partners is performing well. It’s likely this strategy will continue under Courtney Holt’s leadership.”

Slacker, one of the longest running digital radio and streaming services, has been acquired by LiveXLive Media.
Streaming business may force music companies to change sales job titles
In the digital era, some job titles at music companies may need to be rebranded thanks to streaming.
Beyond streaming

Radio can't accommodate today's hit music
“Radio is not reflecting the streaming consumption patterns of its listeners. When labels and/or artists drop multiple tracks within a short period of time, radio struggles to properly expose that music to keep up with the audience consumption of those songs.”
I know there are some great talents in radio on this mailing list. If you want to do a piece to counter some of the statements, I’m happy to feature it.

Why I think social media is for branding and engagement, not traffic or revenue
Businesses will no longer join social media for traffic or revenue, but for brand building and engagement. Here’s why.
Do "they" really say: "technological progress is slowing down"?
The iPhone X would have cost nearly $150 trillion and required 30x the world’s power output if it were built in 1957.

The history of the music industry's first-ever digital single for sale, 20 years after its release
In September 1997, Capitol Records made history by releasing Duran Duran’s “Electric Barbarella” on the internet as the first-ever digital single for sale, heralding a massive shift in how the music industry operates. Twenty years later, then-Capitol head of new media Robin Sloan Bechtel and then-Billboard reporter Brett Atwood revisit the landmark event.
